Beginning to Represent Data

As part of the second grade curriculum, students are asked to take a set of data and represent it. There are many different ways we can use to represent data. Below are three of the most common examples student choose to begin to represent data.

Survey Question: What is your favorite animal - a dog, a cat, or both?
Results: dog-3, cat-2, both-4

1. Tally Chart: To create a tally chart, students simply place one tally for each response.


2. Pictures: There are many different ways to organize pictures. Below is one sample.



3. Venn Diagram: A Venn Diagram is used to compare data where there is a common factor. Inside this diagram, data can be represented using tally marks, pictures, or numbers.
